LINCOLN (SNR) – An icon-painting workshop will be held June 6-11 in the John XXIII Diocesan Center in Lincoln.
The six-day, intensive course is designed to captivate participants in the art of the Byzantium painting technique. Visiting master iconographer and instructor Theodoros Papadopoulos will guide participants, step by step, through the ancient techniques of Byzantine Iconography in creating the “Mother of God” icon (pictured at right).
The workshop is open to beginners or professionals. It is designed as an opportunity to learn or refine techniques in the sacred art.
The course focuses on the art of egg tempera painting, teaching the artistic practices and the theology of iconography. The coursework is divided into individual steps; the instructor explains the principles and then demonstrates each phase in detail, answering all questions. The course will be held daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Papadopoulos, of Larissa, Greece, has more than 23 years of professional work in iconography. His commissions range from personal icons to painting religious murals in churches in his homeland, as well as abroad.
Papadopoulos conducted a similar workshop in Lincoln in 2015. He will also conduct workshops this summer in San Francisco, Denver, Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin.
The course fee is $680. The price includes most supplies including boards, pigments and brushes. Registration is required and space is limited. A non-refundable deposit of $230 is required to reserve a place in the workshop. The remaining balance is due upon arrival June 6 at the John XXIII Diocesan Center, 3700 Sheridan Blvd., Lincoln.
